Devil’s Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) also called, grapple plant or wood spider is native to southern Africa. This unique plant gets its name from the tiny hooks that can be seen all over its fruit.
Devil’s Claw root was introduced to Europe in the mid 1900s where the dried roots were used for a wide range of imbalances, especially for conditions that cause joint discomfort.* The extract contains a range of Iridoid glycosides, including harpagoside found in the root, which was first isolated from Devil’s Claw. Folklore recognizes the claw-like seeds which resemble a rheumatic hand, which gives a hint to the use of this herbal extract.
