Elecampane Root, (Inula helenium) is also known as marchalan, elf dock, wild sunflower, scabwort, horseheal and velvet dock. Some of these nicknames were the result of Elecampane Root being used to cure ailments in animals years ago.

Elecampane is a large plant that has beautiful bright yellow flowers and grows in Great Britain, central and southern Europe, parts of Asia west of the Himalayas, and in the eastern and central regions of North America. It is a member of the same plant family as the sunflowers and ragweed.

The plant grows best in the dampness of meadows and wet pastures. It is easily grown from seeds and cuttings. Blooming in mid to late summer, Elecampane can grow as high as 3-6 feet. The lower stem can easily be identified by its hairy, sparsely branched look. The root is the most important part of the plant for medicinal uses. It is very thick, cylindrical and yellow on the outside, and white on the inside. The root is ground into powder and used in capsules, and for tea, exhibiting a warm, bitter taste.

Legend has it that the name “Inula” comes from Greek Mythology when Helen of Troy cried tears that turned into the healing plant they called Elecampane.
