What is Juniper Berry?

Juniper berries (Juniperus Communis), also known as Juniper Fructus, Bacchae juniper, genever, and ginepro grow on evergreens. They are found in Europe, Southwestern Asia up to the Himalayas, and North America. Unlike the hard pine cones we are accustomed to seeing on evergreens, the Juniper berry cones are soft and fleshy. The berries ripen on a three-year cycle. First flowering, then green berry cones grow, and finally in the third year, they become a dark blue-black.

The berries have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. The Romans used the juniper berry as a substitute for expensive black pepper, and it was also used for flavoring in England and Scotland, making game dishes and cakes tastier.
